You Bought a Serger. Now What? A Beginner’s Guide to Setup and First Use
Congratulations. You did the thing. The box is on your table, you’ve been staring at it for maybe longer than you’d like to admit, and now you’re wondering exactly what you’ve gotten yourself into.
I remember this feeling well. My serger was purchased used, so there was no box to speak of. But the intimidation factor was solidly intact. But even though my serger had been used before, when I got it it was not set up. In fact, it had just been to the sewing machine repair shop for some adjusting and tuning. I jumped on the offer though because the price was great.
Setting up a serger is a process, not an event. It takes longer the first time than it ever will again. There will probably be a moment where you question your life choices. That moment passes. And once you get through setup and run your first test seam, the whole thing suddenly makes sense in a way that no amount of reading about it beforehand could have prepared you for.
This guide walks you through everything — unboxing, setup, threading, first use, and the mistakes most beginners make in those first few sessions. It’s written to apply across most home sergers regardless of brand, because the fundamentals are the same whether you’ve got a Brother, a Singer, a Janome, or anything else. Your manual is your best friend for the specifics of your exact machine, but this will give you the framework to make sense of what that manual is telling you.
Before You Open the Box
Find your manual before you do anything else. I know this sounds obvious but it’s worth saying because the temptation to just dive in is strong and the manual is genuinely essential for a serger in a way it isn’t always for a regular sewing machine. Keep it open next to you throughout setup. You will refer to it constantly and that’s completely normal.
Clear a dedicated workspace. Sergers are bigger than they look in product photos and they need room — room for the machine itself, room for your thread cones, room for the fabric going in and the fabric coming out, and room for you to stand slightly back and squint at the threading path in confusion. A kitchen table or a proper sewing table both work. What doesn’t work is a small corner of a cluttered desk.
Good lighting matters a lot with sergers. The threading paths are tight and the thread is thin. If your workspace has poor overhead lighting, get a task light positioned so it illuminates the front of the machine before you start threading. You’ll thank yourself.
Unboxing — What You’re Going to Find
Open the box carefully and set everything out on your table before you start assembling anything. Most sergers come with:
The machine itself, usually wrapped in a cloth bag or a layer of foam. Lift it out by the body, not by any protruding parts.
A presser foot or two — most machines come with a standard overlock foot already attached and one or two extras in the accessory pouch.
An accessory pouch or small box containing items that vary by machine but typically include extra presser feet, a small screwdriver, tweezers, a cleaning brush, spare needles, a seam ripper, and possibly a net or cap for your thread cones to keep them from unwinding too fast.
A foot pedal and power cord, usually bundled together or tucked alongside the machine.
Thread cones — some machines come with starter cones, some don’t. If yours didn’t include thread, you’ll need four cones before you can do anything. More on that below.
A manual. Possibly two — a quick start guide and a full manual. Read both.
Some machines also include a dust cover and a hard or soft carrying case. Set those aside for now.
Once everything is out of the box, inspect the machine for any obvious shipping damage — check the needles if they’re pre-installed, make sure nothing looks bent or cracked, and verify the presser foot is seated correctly. Shipping occasionally jostles things loose.
Getting Oriented — Understanding Your Machine
Before you thread anything, spend five minutes just looking at your machine and identifying the key parts. This sounds tedious but it makes everything that follows faster and less confusing.
The needle plate is the flat metal surface the fabric slides across. It has a slot or hole for the needle and usually markings indicating seam allowance widths.
The presser foot holds the fabric down against the feed dogs. It will lift and lower via a lever at the back of the machine, just like a regular sewing machine.
The feed dogs are the small ridged teeth that move the fabric through the machine. On a serger, there are usually upper and lower feed dogs working together. You typically can’t see them clearly but you’ll notice the fabric moving smoothly when they’re working correctly.
The cutting blade is one of the features that makes a serger different from a regular machine. It’s a small blade — usually on the right side of the needle — that trims the fabric edge as you sew. It consists of an upper blade that moves and a lower blade that’s stationary. Together they create a clean, consistent trimmed edge on every seam.
You can disengage the blade on most machines for situations where you don’t want to trim — when finishing an edge that’s already cut, for example. Check your manual for how to do this on your specific model.
The loopers are the parts of a serger that have no equivalent on a regular sewing machine, and they’re what make the overlock stitch work. Most home sergers have two loopers — an upper looper and a lower looper — that create the threads wrapping around the fabric edge. You can’t really see the loopers when the machine is closed but you’ll thread them as part of setup.
The thread guides and tension dials are the path the thread follows from the cone to the stitch, and the controls that regulate how much pressure the machine applies to each thread. Most sergers have four separate tension dials — one for each thread. They’re usually numbered or color coded.
The differential feed dial controls the ratio between how fast the front feed dogs move versus the rear feed dogs. This is the setting that prevents knit fabrics from stretching out as you sew and prevents lightweight fabrics from puckering. The neutral position is usually marked and that’s where you’ll start.
The stitch length dial controls how far the fabric moves between each stitch. Longer stitches for heavier fabrics and basting, shorter stitches for fine fabrics and finished seams.
The stitch width dial on machines that have one controls how wide the overlock stitch is — meaning how far from the cut edge the stitching extends.
Take a moment to locate all of these on your machine before moving on. Your manual will have a labeled diagram that identifies everything by name for your specific model.
Setting Up the Thread Cones
Sergers use cones of thread rather than standard spools. Cones hold significantly more thread and unwind smoothly at the speeds a serger operates at. If you try to run standard sewing spools on a serger, the thread unwinds unpredictably and you’ll get tension problems and thread breakage.
Most home sergers use four threads — two for the needles and two for the loopers. Some can be configured for three-thread stitching by removing one needle, but four-thread is the standard setup and where you’ll spend most of your time.
Place your four cones on the thread pins at the top or back of the machine. Most sergers have thread pin holders that angle back slightly to allow smooth unwinding. If your machine came with small thread nets — small mesh tubes that slip over the cone — use them. They slow the unwind rate just enough to prevent the thread from looping off the cone too fast, which causes tangling.
Use the same thread in all four positions while you’re learning. Matching thread weights make threading and tension adjustment significantly easier. Once you’re comfortable, you can mix thread types for specific effects, but for now — same thread, four cones, all the same color if possible so you can track which thread is which during setup.
Threading the Machine — The Part Everyone Finds Intimidating
Threading a serger is the thing that scares beginners the most and the thing that becomes most automatic with practice. The first time takes twenty minutes and feels impossible. The tenth time takes two minutes and feels routine. The hundredth time you’re not even thinking about it.
The cardinal rule of serger threading: follow the color coding and the numbers on your machine in sequence, every single time, without skipping steps. Most modern sergers color code each thread path — matching the number on the spool pin, the thread guides, and the looper — so you always know which thread goes where. Your manual will have a threading diagram that shows the complete path for each thread. Have it open.
Here’s the general sequence that applies to most machines, in order.
Start with the upper thread guides at the top of the machine. Each thread has a numbered path that begins at the top. Pull each thread through its first guide before moving to the next part of the path. Don’t thread all four through the first guide before moving on — thread one complete path, or follow your machine’s specific instructions.
Bring each thread down through the tension discs. These are the small discs or gates along the thread path that apply resistance to control how much thread feeds through. For the tension discs to work correctly, the presser foot must be raised when you thread. Raised presser foot means open tension discs, which means the thread can seat itself properly between them. Lowered presser foot closes the discs. Threading with the presser foot down is one of the most common beginner mistakes and results in no tension on that thread at all.
Thread the needles last. The needle threads are usually the most straightforward — they follow a path similar to a regular sewing machine needle. Thread from front to back through the needle eye. Leave a thread tail of about six inches hanging through.
Thread the loopers. This is the part that requires the most patience. The looper thread paths are tight and the target — the looper eye — is small and in a hard-to-see location. Use the tweezers from your accessory kit. Most machines require you to bring the loopers to a specific position before threading — check your manual for this. On many machines you turn the handwheel to a specific position marked in the manual before attempting to thread the loopers.
The lower looper is typically threaded first. The thread path usually goes through a series of guides, down and around the lower looper, and back up. The upper looper thread path weaves through and around the lower looper thread — they interact in a specific way to form the overlock stitch, so getting the routing right matters.
If your machine has a built-in threading assist for the lower looper — some do — use it. It makes what is otherwise the most frustrating step significantly easier. Check your manual.
Once all four threads are through their paths, pull all thread tails toward the back of the machine, leaving several inches of tail on each.
Before You Sew — Check These Things
With the machine threaded, do a quick check before you touch the foot pedal.
Make sure all thread tails are pulled toward the back of the machine and out of the way. Loose thread tails can get caught under the foot or in the cutting blade.
Check that the presser foot is lowered.
Check that the differential feed is in the neutral position.
Set your stitch length to the middle of the range for your first test — most machines have a range of roughly 1 to 4, and starting at 2.5 to 3 is a good neutral position.
Verify the cutting blade is engaged. For your first test seams you want to see the blade working so you understand what it does.
Your First Test Seam
Grab a piece of scrap fabric — cotton quilting fabric or anything medium weight is ideal for your first run. Cut a piece roughly twelve inches long. You don’t need to mark it or prepare it in any way.
Raise the presser foot and slide the fabric under it, positioning it so the right edge of the fabric aligns with the cutting blade. Lower the presser foot.
Hold the thread tails lightly as you start — this prevents them from being pulled down under the fabric plate and creating a jam in your first inch of sewing.
Press the foot pedal gently. The machine will start stitching, the blade will trim the fabric edge, and you’ll see the overlock stitch forming. Let it run for a few inches.
Slow down before you run off the edge of the fabric. Unlike a regular sewing machine, you don’t backstitch on a serger — there’s no backstitch function. Instead, you chain off the edge of the fabric, letting the machine stitch a few inches of thread chain past the fabric, then cut that chain.
Look at your test seam on both sides. On the top you should see two parallel lines of needle stitching. On the edge and underside you should see the looping overlock thread wrapping cleanly around the trimmed edge. If the stitch looks balanced — even tension, consistent loops, no loose thread bunching on either side — you’re threaded correctly.
Reading Your Test Seam — What the Problems Mean
If the stitch doesn’t look right, the test seam tells you where the problem is.
Loops of thread on the top surface usually mean the upper looper tension is too loose or the lower looper tension is too tight. Adjust the upper looper tension up slightly and test again.
Loops of thread on the underside usually indicate the lower looper tension is too loose. Adjust the lower looper tension up slightly.
Needle thread loops on either side mean the needle thread tension is off or, more likely, the needle thread isn’t properly seated in the tension discs. Re-thread that needle with the presser foot raised.
Skipped stitches are almost always a needle issue — either the needle is inserted incorrectly, it’s the wrong type for your fabric, or it’s damaged. Check needle insertion first: the flat side of the needle shank should face back on most machines, and the needle should be pushed all the way up into the clamp before tightening.
Thread breaking points to tension that’s too tight on that thread, a threading error on that path, or a damaged needle. Check the threading path first, then back the tension off slightly.
Fabric puckering on lightweight material means the differential feed needs to come down slightly below the neutral position, which causes the front feed dogs to move a little slower and prevents the fabric from being pushed into a gather.
Stretched or wavy edges on knit fabric means the differential feed needs to go up above neutral, which stretches the fabric slightly as it feeds through and prevents it from being stretched by the stitching process.
The general principle with tension adjustments: change one dial at a time, by small increments, and test after each adjustment. Changing multiple things at once makes it impossible to know what fixed the problem.
The Serger Chaining Habit — Start and End Every Seam This Way
One of the differences between sewing on a serger versus a regular machine is how you start and finish seams. Because there’s no backstitch, you need a different method to secure the thread at each end.
At the start of a seam, position your fabric under the presser foot and begin sewing. The stitching itself secures as you go — don’t try to tie off the beginning.
At the end of a seam, run the machine off the edge of the fabric and continue stitching for three to four inches past the edge to create a thread chain. Cut this chain leaving about a three inch tail. To secure it, thread that tail onto a hand needle and weave it back into the seam — three or four passes in different directions is plenty to lock it permanently. Some sewists apply a tiny drop of seam sealant instead.
Getting into this habit from the beginning will save you from the frustration of seams that unravel from the ends, which is a real thing that happens when the chain-off isn’t secured.
Common Early Mistakes — And How to Avoid Them
Threading with the presser foot down. Always raise the presser foot before threading. Always.
Sewing over pins. Never sew over pins on a serger. The cutting blade will hit a pin and both the blade and the pin can be damaged or shatter in ways that are genuinely dangerous. Remove pins before the fabric reaches the presser foot, always.
Pulling the fabric through. Let the feed dogs do the work. Pulling the fabric from behind changes the stitch length and can damage the loopers. Guide, don’t pull.
Ignoring the thread tails at the start. Hold those tails for the first few stitches of every seam. An unsecured tail can get pulled under the fabric plate and jam the machine, which means stopping, re-threading, and sometimes clearing a bird’s nest of thread from under the needle plate.
Changing too many settings at once. When something isn’t working, change one thing, test, evaluate. Serger troubleshooting is methodical. Random adjusting makes things worse.
Not cleaning the machine regularly. Sergers produce more lint than regular sewing machines because they’re also cutting fabric as they sew. That cut fabric produces fine fuzz that accumulates fast. Get in the habit of brushing out the bobbin area and under the needle plate every few hours of sewing. A clean machine is a happy machine.
What to Sew First
Once your test seam looks good, the best thing you can do is just use the machine. Don’t wait for a fancy project. Find a piece of scrap fabric and serge every edge on it. Serge curves. Serge corners. Run off the edge and practice the chain-off and securing technique. Get comfortable with how the machine handles before you put anything you care about under the foot.
Your first real project should be simple. A pillowcase, a basic tote bag, a set of napkins — anything with straight seams and no complicated shaping. The goal isn’t the project. The goal is the machine time, because the machine time is what makes everything click.
The serger that looked intimidating in the box will start to feel like the most natural thing in the world faster than you’d expect. Every minute you spend at it is a minute you’re building the kind of comfort that makes all your future sewing — on the serger and on your regular machine — better.
