Since I started sewing a few months ago I’ve been fascinated by the quilts that show up in my socials. I decided I needed to learn how to make a beautiful quilt, too.

So, I bought a book called Quilter’s Academy Vol. 1 – Freshman Year: A Skill-Building Course in Quiltmaking. I read almost all the way through it before I started the quilt. That’s a little out of character for me (since I usually skip instructions).

Building the quilt

The quilt I was making from the book used a log cabin block and two solid blocks. I had a dark blue pattern with sail boats and fireworks and searched for a couple others to match. In hindsight, I should have sought solid colors instead of patterns. Having all patterned fabrics felt pretty noisy overall.

Once I had the log cabin blocks done I cut the remaining solid blocks. I made one set with the paisley pattern and the other with a pattern that has houses, hearts, and flags on it.

After I had all the blocks cut I laid them out and picked them up in order starting with the top left and making piles from left to right. When I had each row in a pile I pinned the piles and the stacked them into one big pile.

Now I began to sew following my stacked organization and chain sewed the first an second block from each row together. Then I added the third and so on all the way to the end.

After I had all the blocks sewn together it was time to sew the rows together. It was pretty easy to sew the rows together because they were already chain sewed together. All I had to do was flip them right sides together and sew the whole row.

I also pressed each and every seam after I sewed it. Now I have a finished quilt top and I can’t wait to start my next project!
