The first time my tension went haywire, I didn’t even know what I was looking at. I flipped my project over halfway through a seam and found a tangled mess of loops on the underside. It looked like the bobbin thread had given up and started making its own decisions. My first instinct was to blame the bobbin. My second instinct was to blame the machine. It took me longer than I’d like to admit to figure out the actual problem was tension. It took even longer to understand what that word was supposed to mean.

Tension problems have a reputation for being mysterious, but once you understand what’s actually happening between your two threads, most of the fixes are almost embarrassingly simple. Here’s what finally made it click for me.
What “Tension” Actually Means
Every stitch your machine makes is really two threads meeting in the middle of your fabric — one coming down from the spool on top, one coming up from the bobbin underneath. Tension is just how much resistance each thread fights against as it feeds through the machine. When both threads pull with the right amount of resistance, they lock together right in the middle of the fabric layers. Your stitch then looks identical from the top and the back. When one side pulls harder than the other, it drags that lock point toward the weaker thread — and that’s the moment your stitches start looking wrong.
How to Tell It’s Actually a Tension Problem
A few signs point specifically to tension rather than something else going on with your machine. Loops or loose thread on the back of your fabric, with a normal-looking top, is the classic sign. That means the bobbin thread isn’t pulling tight enough, or the top thread is pulling too hard. The opposite version, where you can see the bobbin thread sitting on top of your fabric, means the top tension is too loose. Puckering or bunching along your seam, especially on lighter fabrics, usually means the top tension is too tight and dragging the fabric with it. And thread that keeps snapping — particularly the top thread — often means tension is pulling harder than the thread can handle. Still, rule out a damaged needle before you blame the dial.
The Mistake That Causes Most Tension Problems
Before you touch the tension dial at all, check one thing: is your presser foot down while you’re threading the machine? This was my problem for months and I never once thought to check it. When the presser foot is up, the tension discs inside the machine stay open, so the thread just sits loosely between them instead of the discs actually gripping it. Everything looks threaded correctly. It just isn’t. Lower the presser foot before you thread, every single time, and a shocking number of “tension problems” disappear before you ever touch the dial. How to Actually Test Your Tension
Grab a scrap of fabric, ideally with the top thread and bobbin thread in two different colors so you can actually see what’s happening. Sew a straight line about four inches long, then flip the fabric over and look at both sides. If it looks good on both sides — the stitches are even, and you can’t easily tell which thread is which — your tension is balanced and the problem is somewhere else. If one thread is visibly dominating, you’ve confirmed it’s tension, and now you know which direction to adjust.
Adjusting the Dial Without Making It Worse
Tension dials are usually numbered from about 0 to 9, with somewhere around 4 or 5 being the default middle setting most machines ship with. Turn it in small increments — half a number at a time — and test again on a fresh scrap after every adjustment. If the bobbin thread is showing on top, increase the top tension slightly. If the top thread is showing on the bottom, decrease it. Resist the urge to make a big jump. Small changes have a bigger effect than you’d expect, and it’s much easier to walk back a small adjustment than a big one.
Before you touch the dial again after that, check your bobbin case for lint. A buildup of lint and dust around the tension spring on the bobbin case is one of the sneakiest causes of tension trouble, because it quietly changes the resistance without you doing anything. A dry, soft-bristled brush — a lot of machines actually come with a tiny one — clears it out in under a minute.
Why Tension Can Change Mid-Project
Sometimes tension looks perfect for an entire project and then goes wrong out of nowhere in the middle of a seam. Before you assume something broke, check whether your bobbin is running low — a nearly-empty bobbin can create just enough extra resistance to throw things off. Switching thread weights mid-project, like moving from an all-purpose thread to a heavier topstitching thread, almost always requires a tension adjustment too. Heavier thread needs a different amount of resistance to feed evenly. If your tension was fine yesterday and isn’t today, and nothing else changed, try a full rethread from scratch — spool tension disc included. That fixes it more often than turning the dial.
When It’s Not Actually Tension At All
A handful of things get blamed on tension that have nothing to do with the dial. Old or low-quality thread frays and behaves unpredictably as it feeds through the machine, and that can look exactly like a tension problem even when your settings are fine. And if it’s been a while since you oiled your machine, dried-out internal parts create extra friction that no tension adjustment can compensate for. A small bottle of clear sewing machine oil and five minutes with your manual’s oiling diagram solves more mystery problems than people expect.
When to Stop Fiddling and Call a Technician
Say you’ve checked your threading, tested on scrap fabric, cleaned out the bobbin case, and ruled out your thread and needle — and you’re still getting inconsistent stitches. That’s probably not something you can dial your way out of. A grinding or clicking noise while sewing, tension that changes on its own mid-seam, or a machine you dropped or haven’t serviced in years — those are all signs of a mechanical issue. Timing might be off, or a part inside the machine could be bent or worn, and a home fix won’t solve that. That’s not a failure on your part. Sewing machines are mechanical, and mechanical things eventually need a professional look, the same way a car does.
One Last Thing
Tension problems feel like a personal failure the first few times they show up, mostly because the fix is invisible until you know what you’re looking for. It isn’t. It’s a mechanical relationship between two threads. Once you understand what that relationship should look like, you’ll start recognizing the signs before they wreck an entire seam. Give yourself permission to test on scrap fabric every time you’re unsure — it takes thirty seconds and it will save you from unpicking a lot more than that.
